As a mother, I can testify that potty trading your children isn’t the most pleasant part of parenthood. If you think that training a child to go potty properly was challenging, it is nothing compared to training a cat! While you can communicate to your child fairly easily, talking to your cat just gets you funny looks from bystanders. Stopping your cart from pooping and peeing all over your house can be traumatic. After a long and busy day the last thing you want to be dealing with is cleaning up a foul mess made by your darling little pet. Understanding why your cat isn’t using the litter tray can be tricky. But don’t worry, this is something you can fix. If your cat is suddenly not using the litter box then I’ve got a few things to tell you. I have had many cats in my life and I know the pain a pooper can cause. You aren’t alone in this.
A few years ago, I got lucky and managed to buy, second hand and cheap, a large wooden box full of legos. My kids loved, spending hours rifling through the box and letting their imaginations fly. A few months later me and my husband decided to get my eldest a pet, to teach responsibility. Of course we got a cat! Not so mysteriously, about the same time little patches of cat pee started turning up around the house. The final straw was when my son came to me, a disgruntled look on his face and his little hands full of lego blocks. He held them up, wrinkled his nose and said “My legos smell funny..”. I looked in the box and to put it as nicely as I can – The cat was not using litter box to pee. The cat had decided this was its new litter box. Needless to say I clean that child thoroughly. It wasn’t fun explaining to my children why the Legos couldn’t be played with…
That wasn’t the first or the last time I had to deal with cats not using their litter box. I have lost count the number of times I have smelt that horrible smell of cat urine or cat poop and had to search high and low for where my precious little cat has decided go poop.
And you know what? It doesn’t have to be this way! There are some really easy and simple ways to trick your cat back into the litter box. But first you need to understand why your cat is not using the litter box all of a sudden.
Why Is My Cat Not Using the Litter Box
Here are the top reasons:
- Lack of training
- Problems with the litter box
- Elderly incontinence
Training Your Cat to Use the Litter Box
In my legosbox/litter box story the reasons were simple. It was a new cat and just hadn’t learnt the ropes. It was a rescued cat, so I suspect that it’s previous owners didn’t look after it too well. Often what happens is that a cat will stop using its litter box and the owners will just turf it outside the house while they clean. This teaches the cat nothing. Giving it physical contact could even give it positive reinforcement, making the problem worse! The cat will continue to poop and pee where it pleases. The owners get more and more frustrated, often, leading to the cat being abandoned. If you are reading this you obviously aren’t one of these heartless owners but are no doubt still frustrated by your cats behaviors. These can be tricky to work out but I have a trusted solution to potty training your cat. When you get to the bottom of this article I talk about Secrets of Cats. It is a guaranteed solution to your problem (by guaranteed I am talking about the money back kind, not just a promise!) If you want a deeper understanding of your cat then this is for you!
Problems With the Litter Box
The problem might not be with the cat at all! How much thought did you put into what litter box you bought and where you put it? Most owners just get the cheapest box they see on the shelves. Then they place it wherever seems easiest to clean. Saving time and hassle for us, the owner, is understandable, but as an owner you have to be responsible and consider the cats needs as well. If your cat isn’t using the litter box then try the following:
- Position the litter box somewhere else, perhaps some where with more privacy
- Using a different kind of litter (especially if your cat is declawed)
- Placing multiple litter boxes
- Ensure the litter box is cleaned more frequently
- Get a larger litter box
These are only a few suggestions. You need to try a little detective work and see what you could do to make the litter box more appealing to your cat.
Litter Box Problems With Elderly Cats
The saddest example is that of elderly cats not using the litter box. As frustrating as it is you can’t blame them. They are in the twilight of their years where their body and mind just aren’t what it used to be. It is hard to teach an old cat new tricks so if an older cat is not using the litter box then you will have to have a little patience. It isn’t pleasant but as they get nearer to the end of their life there is a good chance your pet will develop cat incontinence.
You need to treat their behavior as a symptom
The causes with elderly cats ignoring the litter box aren’t always the same as with younger cats. There is an increased risk of infection or diseases, which can lead to elderly cat incontinence. Or it could be something as simple as arthritis in their joints. Stepping up into the litter box may have become too painful for them, so they go somewhere else. If you notice your cat pooping near the litter box then this could be a sign of joint pain.
The Secret to Stopping Cats From Pooping and Peeing Outside Their Litter Box
Cats, just like humans, are creatures of habit. If your cat stops using the litter box then wherever else it starts pooping will be considered by it to be its new litter box. While this can be frustrating it means that it can be relatively simple to retrain it’s habits if you know the trick. These solutions aren’t my own, I get them from one of my favorite sites, Secrets of Cats. My friends call me a cat expert (that’s why I started this blog) but here most of what I have learned comes from them. I owe them a lot, so spreading word of their secrets is my way of saying thanks to them.
